I'm not watching YouTube videos anymore.

I just watched Noodles recent video, and it gave me a good reminder on why YouTube isn't fun anymore. I feel like all these essay videos or Asmongold type shit videos are the real brain rot of YouTube because most of them are such a waste of time and usually morph into something that's completely different than the original thing it was about and usually having some sort of real-life element into it or just a sense of... doom in general and are usually overexerted to hell (and mostly having BAD humor). I wish things were fun again when people were actually creative with their shit and did different things. I don't care if a thing I like gets into the spotlight of these creators and the thing "is flawed" or "not to the standard of now." I'm tired of watching stuff that's literally just about nothing that's projecting to a nothing message that leads to NOTHING. I'd rather actually watch something I enjoy that's different instead of something that's usually lame and a total time waster. I don't care if it's not perfect or old I LIKE IT, and no matter what their communities say, the interest is ""flawed"" because I don't give a fuck! This can also be projected into all of media now, and I'm not saying that there isn't anything good nowadays because there is, but all of this YouTube shit is a big kidney stone of the creative field and makes the already self damaging field A LOT worse, and I really hope... one day stuff can be different, and maybe if people realize what they are doing in a current moment in their life or just doing self-improvement and being independent in everything they do and have a bigger mindset it can be better, just a thought.

Noodle is a frustrating youtuber because some of his video essays are really well made, but then you have his one video regarding "Why games are too big", where he carefully misinterprets counterarguments, blatantly removes statements from context, and deceptively edits other peoples' videos & audio to be easier to debunk, and overall is indirectly defending exploitive anti-consumer business practices.

Guys like him cement my belief that I don't wanna hear people's opinions on game development unless they've made a deeper game than just "Untitled Game Test #9,000".

I just watched his video on "how to talk about a video game" and that one might have cemented my distaste for his videos. He just spends 30 minutes whining about Egoraptor saying slurs and insulting OOT fans in a video he made 10 years ago, as if Arin doesn't probably regret parts of that review the same way Noodle admits to not fully agreeing with bits of his old video on frame interpolation.

Thank god for the few people who still just crank out harmless let's plays and video game reviews. I can't stand this meta arguing crap.

Fuck you give me money!

Noodle was Graeme / 2 Left Thumbs’ old NG handle so I got very confused for a second there, LOL

The video essay format is definitely oversaturated on YouTube right now

Honesty I might be of the minority in this, but when has there been a good age where YouTube is just "fun" ? I don't count saying your favorite channels or creators either I meant as a website. The website has always had this type of "brain rot" videos in general like if this was over a decade ago people would be saying mostly the same shit when it comes commentary videos like Leafy and it's hundred clones or even a few years before that where people were saying the same thing for rant videos. People in general are always going to beef or have a "doom" mindset.

Personally Noodle's latest video I'm just mixed on I get the core message, but I feel like it down plays how people view others online regardless of the nuance it doesn't matter if you sugar coat it or be nice there are going to be people who already made up their mind as soon as they even see the title of the video. I feel like it also ignores how Arin presents himself outside of the video when it comes to playing any game to the point where he becomes infamous for not even having the patience to read a freaking tutorial which retroactively put the Sequelitis videos into a questionable position. Him mentioning the 60 FPS video is funny in hindsight since he made a entire response video ripping on people who don't get the point of the video which is far more egregious than just making a caricature of a internet user for a quick skit.

Overall Youtube as a website is always going to have people making dumb takes, beefing each other, creating the 85th exposed video on Mr.Beast while react channels & streamers free boot it. It's better just take a more strict diet of videos to watch. Outside of that Noodle should stick to making media retrospectives or odd topics like looking back on screen ratios. It's shame too because I still love his overall presentation.

When I saw this post at first I was thinking-

"Lemme guess is this gonna be another one of those fence sitting videos that whine about people talking about the growing number of political brain rot in video games and form their entire argument about not caring about politics while simultaneously caring a fuck ton about people that talk about it."

Luckily it wasn't but that's still an issue you see around here.

The channels you're looking for do exist. There's still a lot of small creators on Youtube just doing their thing, trends be damned. I'm one of them.

The issue is that Youtube's algorithm & search function makes it absolutely impossible to find them. Tags just don't seem to exist on Youtube. You go to Youtube's help page about tags and they tell you "they're the thing you put on a video when you upload it!" except when you're uploading, Youtube straight up tells you "lol tags are meaningless." Your TITLE is the only way a video can get discovered.

But when you're a small, independent horror artist making weird art house films with Smash Bros, Youtube doesn't know what to do with you and buries your channel until you make something the algorithm agrees with, and even then, it's still a matter of chance. That's what is really wrong with Youtube, as well as a slew of other shit. It's not just the constant stream of meaningless Youtube video essays, it's also forcing this content in your face because that's what is selling.

Youtube used to be YOUtube. It was just kids, teenagers, and young adults making garbage, sometimes with feeling. Now, it's all been swept up by corporation after corporation. Most of the biggest channels have some kind of company backing them to help push their content, leaving people like me absolutely starving for just a fucking view. And the worst part? I don't have an alternative.

Is this a joke? Those first six or seven years of Youtube was bored college students with cameras filming themselves hanging out with friends playing video games, folks reviewing childhood crap, and people splicing shitposts together in Windows Movie Maker, when seeing gameplay footage from a capture card instead of an awkward "camera pointed at the TV barely in focus" setup was a cool and novel sight... all THAT stuff was great. Somehow even with the presence of a video response feature there wasn't all that much serious drama going on. The dumbest, most engagement baity take you'd see was a person insisting that Super Smash Bros Brawl is the worst game ever and Sonic '06 is actually a misunderstood gem of a game.

I hope that era's not becoming lost media or something.

When Youtube started tweaking the rules involving monetization every whenever-they-feel-like-it, there was a shift and people went from making & uploading to Youtube for fun, to cranking content out that was mathematically designed to get views and rake in cash.

Yes, this includes all media too (don't even get me started with the hidden gems on Steam like Fractal Block World ). It's such a shame the actual underrated stuff that actually does the groundbreaking work barley gets noticed, but then again it could also be due to the AMOUNT of same shit content that is being created as we speak :(

Yeah? what's wrong with giving an opinion on an OVERDONE genre, and it's not even just one type of video its MOSTLY the entirety of YouTube and its different genres that have these issues, I wouldn't necessarily have problems with it but the thing is its all the same garbage within these types of videos, so there really isn't a point on watching ANYTHING there anymore, it's just best to look at the open thinkers that are hidden but that's the thing: they WOULDNT be hidden if it weren't for the current content slop that I'm talking about.

Fun Fact: Only 2% of people who suck up to mediocre content farm-y Youtube video essayists will get noticed... But you can boost your chances of getting noticed all the way up to 87% if you rush to their aid in a random NGBBS thread that they will certainly see!

White knighting aside, Tango is right about not watching videos made by creators you don't like. For all its faults, Youtube's got a "Not interested" button and a "Don't recommend channel" button that I wish more people online were acquainted with. If your feed is full of crap, just stop deliberately watching videos made by people you don't like. Youtube doesn't care if you're only clicking on their videos to hit the dislike button. Also just boils down to what people consume. With Youtube, I am extremely careful about what I watch to avoid the algorithm poisoning my recommendations with things I don't want, and even then it's not perfect. You watch ONE video about how an embroidery machine works to send to a friend and suddenly Youtube is recommending you embroidery videos for two weeks.

But hey, I suppose that's why a lot of us are here on other sites like Newgrounds, or in my case I'm pretty active on Sheezy. The only way to get myself out there and heard is by word of mouth.

I agree but meh, my point still is too real :/ (also I know what a "let's play" is I get what you're referring to and unfortunately that's also not my type) I just don't like the overabundance of it either, like I wish I wouldn't have to "click a button" every time another commentary video is recommended to me and resulting of that making more smartasses on the internet but whatever I'm trying not to be bothered by things it's a real issue for me.
